How the skin benefits from olive oil.

Today we’re talking olive oil.

Of course we already know the health benefits of this wonderful oil when ingested.   It’s packed full of the good fats and Vitamins A & E.   It keeps an eye on your heart and helps it to function better when eaten regularly.

In the west we tend to “discover” how things work, how beneficial they are and shout it to the world as if it’s a new discovery.  Olive Oil has, in fact, been used since ancient times.  Thousands of years ago they were pressing and grinding oils for medicinal purposes and used it in their every day diets.

But what about putting it on your skin?   Well…..you know what I always say!  Sixty percent of what you put ON your skin is actually absorbed BY your skin.   So yes..yes, it’s good for your skin as well!  It’s LOADED with anti-oxidants and helps your body protect itself from those mean free-radicals.

That’s why around the world Olive Oil is well known for treating sunburns, dry skin, stretch marks and soothes all kinds of skin rashes and ailments.

Soaking your fingernails in olive oil will not only soften your cuticles but strengthen you nails.  Add a squeeze of lemon to a few tablespoons and soak away!

Massage some olive oil into your scalp at night and sleep with it in your hair (you only need a little bit).  Wash it out when you wake up.  This is a great help for those with flaky scalp or itchy head.

Rub a little on your lips to keep them soft and supple.

Add a couple tablespoons to your bath and let your entire body soak in it’s bliss.  Olive Oil is packed with Vitamin E.

Put a drop of two on your finger and lightly massage olive oil on your feet and elbows and soften up that dry skin!  The oil penetrates deep into the layers of skin.  And a little tip?  Moisten the skin first and that will help the oil feel less greasy.  Use it daily.  It’s a great habit to start!

When you are purchasing olive oil, you should just go right for the best quality, so buy extra virgin or pure oil olive.   It’s not that much more expensive and it goes a long…long way.

I love this post!!! Being of Greek ancestry I have been trained since I was a baby by my Mom and grandmothers that olive oil is like liquid gold!!! Not only do we cook with it all the time but we use it for many of the things you listed above: bathing, soaking cuticles, scalps, stretch marks, dry skin…the list goes on and on. I believe I owe my great skin to my Greek heritage and olive oil! :-)

Who knew. I thought EVOO was just for cooking. I never heard of it, till I started watching rachel Ray and cooking with her. LOL

When my dad’s hair line began to recede, he started rubbing Olive Oil on his head and he still has a full head of hair. This was at least 20 years ago. He still rubs it on daily!

  5. I love using all kinds of oils in my skincare routine. Coconut oil is my favorite, but I like jojoba, almond, and olive oil, too. I think people think oils will make you break out because oily skin breaks out the most. But skin produces oil as part of the detoxification process. Both the oil and the acne are caused by something else.

  6. i love coconut oil for my skin, i am more partial to it than olive probably b/c i love the smell!
